Heron Neck LighthouseSituated at the southern tip of Green's Island roughly 2 miles southwest of Vinalhaven, the Heron Neck lighthouse was built in 1854, the same year as the Pumpkin Island lighthouse. The white, cylindrical, brick tower with red and black trim is 30 feet tall and attached to the 1.5 story, L-shaped, wood frame keeper's dwelling (1895). A brick oil house (1903), sound signal building and foghorn (both 1944), and generator building are also present at this site. A previous fog siren is on display at the Maine Lighthouse Museum in Rockland.

The light was automated in 1982 when the fifth-order Fresnel lens was replaced by a modern 300mm optic. The keeper's quarters were damaged by fire in 1989, after which the Coast Guard indicated its intention to demolish it. Ownership of the station was later transferred to the Island Institute which, in turn, has leased it to an individual intent on restoring the impaired facility. The site is presently used for research and education and is not open to the public.
