The Indian Island lighthouse has been privately owned since 1934, when it ceased to be an operational beacon. It was replaced a year later by the Lowell Rock Pole Beacon. The station was originally established in 1850 and included construction of the 1.5 story, T-shaped, brick frame house still on-site to this day. The current 31 foot, square, brick tower was built in 1874 and equipped with fourth order Fresnel lens, which was removed when the lighthouse was deactivated. A fuel house (1888), oil house (1904), and two storage buildings also remain at the site.
