Built in 1853 on the east side on Pond Island, the original 31 foot, white, cylindrical, granite-block Narraguagus lighthouse resting on a foundation of stone is still present at this site. The original keeper's house was built with the tower protruding from the top (see picture below). In 1875, a 1 1/2 story Victorian wood frame keeper's house was built and the original dwelling was removed from around the tower (see picture above).
A work room that connects the light to the new quarters was built in 1887 and in 1894 a new brick covering was added. A boat slip was added to the site in 1900 for emergency access. An oil house was added in 1905 and the site also sports two storage buildings. A clubhouse and an inn were added in 1878 and a golf course was built in 1920.
Sometimes confused with the Pond Island light at the mouth of the Kennebec River, the Narraguagus lighthouse is located five miles south of Milbridge at the entrance to Narraguagus Bay. As with the Winter Harbor site, the lighthouse, buildings, and surrounding land were sold at auction in 1934 when use of the light was discontinued. It remains privately owned and serves as a vacation spot including the Pond Island House which hosts guests to this day. The site and tower are closed to the public and are best seen by boat or air.
