The Prospect Harbor Point Light Station was first established in 1850 to mark the harbor and warn fisherman away from the perilous dangers of Prospect Point. Prospect Harbor has been a busy fishing port for well over a century and remains so to this day. The original light only remained lit for nine years before the station was shut down for over a decade. Prospect Harbor Point LighthouseIn 1891, the keeper's house with attached tower (see picture at right) was replaced by the existing 1.5-story wooden structure and a separate tower (see picture above) at the direction of the Lighthouse Board. The white tower with black lantern is located on the eastern side of the inner harbor. The site also sports a stone oil house (1905) and a wooden boat shed.

The Prospect Harbor Point lighthouse was staffed until 1934 when its last keeper retired. It was then automated in 1951 when the original fifth-order Fresnel was replaced by the present 250mm optic. The tower was significantly restored by the Coast Guard in 1999-2000. Additional restoration has been underway in recent years in including the removal and repair of the lantern in 2004.

For preservation purposes, the tower was leased by the Coast Guard to the American Lighthouse Foundation in 2000. The Prospect Harbor Point lighthouse is located on an active military base and managed by the U.S. Naval Satellite Operations Center. The keeper's house, known as Gull Cottage, is used by the Navy as guest quarters. While the site is closed to the public, it can be photographed from several locations nearby.
