The Rockland Harbor Southwest lighthouse is the only privately built beacon in New England. Dr. Bruce Woollett, a true lighthouse enthusiast, built the lighthouse in the mid-1980s. With the assistance of the Maine Lighthouse Museum in Rockland, the 44 foot, gray, square cylindrical frame tower rising from a two-story residence was recognized by the Coast Guard as an official aid to navigation, warning vessels away from the nearby Seal Ledge, in 1987. The original electric marine lens was replace in 1989 with a fifth order Fresnel lens transferred from the Doubling Point range lights near Bath.
