Built in 1857, the Tenants Harbor lighthouse remained in service until 1933 when it was sold to a private party. Ownership of the site changed hands several times over the years until it was purchased by artist Andrew Wyeth and his wife Betsy in 1978. It has remained in the Wyeth family and is currently owned by their son and artist, Jamie. The lighthouse is featured in Andrew Wyeth's work entitled Signal Flags and Jamie's work Iris At Sea.
The 27 foot cylindrical tower is painted white with a black lantern and rests on a stone foundation. The 1.5 story, wood-framed, colonial cape keeper's residence was also built in 1857 and is still on site. A brick covered passageway connects the keeper's quarters to the tower. Other buildings include a storage building (1895) and an oil house (1906). A replica wood, square, pyramid-shaped bell tower was reconstructed and is used as a studio.
The Tenants Harbor light station, located on Southern Island, has not been an active aid to navigation since it was sold by the government and is closed to the public. The lighthouse can be seen from from the shore in Tenants Harbor or via Boat tour.
